County Kilkenny offers the finest of the southeast's countryside. Mostly it's intensely pretty, rich farmland, especially to the north of New Ross around the confluence of the Nore and Barrow rivers. Medieval ruins are scattered all over the county, but they reach their richest concentration in ancient Kilkenny city - a quaint but really bustling favourite. The delightful surroundings make it ideal for biking around the river valleys and their medieval ruins, most notably Kells Priory and Jerpoint Abbey . The cycling is easy: off the main roads there's little traffic, and the minor roads that stay close to the rivers are especially scenic. Alternatively, the heart of this rich, historical farmland can be crossed on foot. As they head south, the Nore and Barrow rivers flow through gentle valleys of mixed woodland. The South Leinster Way provides unstrenuous walking, passing through pretty riverside villages - Inistioge, Graiguenamanagh, and nearby Borris and St. Mullins - before heading north towards the Blackstairs Mountains . To access the area from Kilkenny hitching is probably your best bet, as there's just one bus a week, on Thursday, from Kilkenny to Inistioge. Alternatively, you could see the region from the cruises that operate from the river port of New Ross .
