In the southeast corner of Ireland, the sea has made inroads into an otherwise flat region, forming small lagoons popular with wind-surfers, at Tacumshane and Lady's Island , both venues for bird enthusiasts. Lady's Island itself sits mid-lagoon at the end of a causeway and has been a place of religious devotion for centuries: an annual pilgrimage to our Lady is still made here on August 15. On the island are the remains of an Augustinian priory and a Norman castle, both built in the thirteenth century, but the spirit of the place has been destroyed by a large, modern church building that has been tacked onto the side. West of here lies the quaint fishing village of Kilmore Quay , a good choice for accommodation and the departure point for trips to view the colonies of puffins on the Saltee Islands . The Hook Head Peninsula , around twenty miles further west, offers fine beaches, bracing walks and atmospheric castle and abbey ruins. There are few eating options for travellers in the area, but The Lobster Pot bar and restaurant at Carne is a great exception, serving delicious seafood meals.
