Though the ancient Viking town of Wexford bills itself as a tourist centre, you're unlikely to spend more than a day or so here unless you have a car. Sadly, little evidence remains of the town's long and stormy history, and the place is most enjoyable for its small but lively cultural scene . The wildfowl reserves of the North Slobs are easily accessible, and some marvellous beaches are to be found nearby, stretching the length of County Wexford's shoreline north to the popular resort of Courtown. Inland, historic towns like New Ross, Enniscorthy and Ferns merit a visit if you're passing through. To see the best of the south coast, head for quaint Kilmore Quay , or rent a bike and explore the isolated and intriguing Hook Head Peninsula . County Carlow is less likely to feature on your itinerary, as there's little in the way of sights. The county is at its prettiest along the River Barrow, which for much of its length forms the boundary between Carlow and Kilkenny. The South Leinster Way trudges at its most lonesome and desolate through the northern half of the Blackstairs Mountains; Carlow town, situated on the Dublin-Kilkenny train route, barely warrants attention.
