Of the mountain ranges in southern Tipperary, the Galtees make up one of the most scenic inland ranges in the country and are well worth discovering - the Glen of Aherlow makes an excellent base in the heart of it all . The Knockmealdowns are less interesting, but offer easier hill-walking. The valley plain between the two mountain ranges, which runs for about ten miles east of Mitchelstown (itself over the border in County Cork ), is not much in itself, but the Mountain Lodge An Oige hostel is a good overnight stop for hikers, and the Mitchelstown caves are well worth a visit. Starting from Clonmel you've a choice of two routes west: the main roads via Cahir , or the lesser R665, which cuts straight across to Mitchelstown.
