Leaving Clonmel, you could either head southwest to the plain between the Knockmealdown and Galtee mountains ; or north for Cashel, in which case the route via FETHARD is the most rewarding. A touchingly plain place to travel through, and rarely sought out by tourists, Fethard has a number of forgotten medieval remains, set at the back of the town towards the river. One of these is a ruined Templars' Castle , access to which is through the Castle Inn (contact the publican, Mr Keogh). Other remains of old friaries and Iron Age raths can be found in the surrounding land. There's also a Folk Farm and Transport Museum at the beginning of the Cashel Road (Sun noon-6pm, otherwise by appointment; tel 052/31516; GBP2/?2.54). For refreshments, P.J. Lonegan's home-cooked lunches are worth stopping off for and McCarthy's is a good place for a drink and also has a good restaurant alongside.
