Tipperary is the largest of Ireland's inland counties, and also the richest. The county's wealth comes from the central Golden Vale , a flat limestone plain shared with eastern Limerick that's prime beef and dairy cattle territory. This enormous stretch of farming land is abutted on most borders by crops of mountain ranges, the most beautiful of which are the Galtee Mountains and the Glen of Aherlow . These are all in the south of the county, and it's this area, without doubt, that packs in the most excitement. The curling course of the Suir , Tipperary's principal river, sweeps by most of what there is to see. But for many, Tipperary's attractions hang on one site alone. The Rock of Cashel is the county's most dramatic feature by far, its limestone sides rising cliff-like 200ft above the level ground, crowned with the high walls and towers of some splendid medieval ecclesiastical architecture. Tipperary often has a vaguely familiar ring, thanks to the World War I marching song It's a long way to Tipperary . The county was actually picked for the song simply for the rhythmic beat of its name, which dashes the romance somewhat. In fact, Tipperary isn't particularly far from anywhere in southern Ireland, and this is probably its greatest advantage: you can catch the few worthwhile sights on your way through, and still be on the south or west coast within a few hours.
