The major sites of interest directly west of Sligo - off the R292 towards Strandhill - are the ancient remains at the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery and, on top of Knocknarea Mountain, Medb's Cairn . Both make for easy day-trips from Sligo town. The main road south and then westward from Sligo (the N59), flanked by the thrilling outlines of the Ox Mountains and the uninspiring coastline of western county Sligo, is scarcely an enthralling route, yet a few things crop up on the way to Mayo that are worth a mention. If you're not in a hurry, take the road running parallel to, and nearer, the coast.
