The key attractions in south Sligo are loosely scattered. Passing through Collooney it's worth calling in to witness the Victorian splendour of Markree Castle, now a hotel, before heading south for Lough Arrow and the area's two prime archeological sites: the Neolithic passage tomb of Heapstown Cairn and the superb Bronze Age Carrowkeel Cemetery, magnificently sited high above the surrounding countryside. South Sligo is also noted for its musical heritage: the great fiddle-player Michael Coleman came from here and the new heritage centre commemorating him at Gurteen sets out to promote the traditional music of today.
