A couple of miles west of Lissadell is RAGHLY , a small harbour with a quiet pier and raised beach from where there are spectacular views of the bay and surrounding mountains. On the way there you'll pass Ardtermon Castle (closed to the public), the seventeenth-century fortified manor house once occupied by Francis Gore-Booth, an ancestor of the Lissadell Gore-Booths. In the early 1990s the place was more or less a ruin, but since then it has been well restored by its German industrialist owner - although, in the absence of documentation of the house's original appearance, the resulting garish yellow is rather more Scottish Baronial than Irish. The next stop along the coast is sandy Streedagh Strand , most easily accessible by taking the main road to Grange (served by 4-6 buses daily from Sligo), and following the signposts from there, as roads on the Raghly Peninsula are hard to disentangle. The beach itself is a fantastic stretch of sand, superb for long walks or horse riding by the waves (there are several stables in the district), though bear in mind that offshore currents can be very strong here. When the tide is at its lowest you can walk round to the caves at the southern end to do some fossil collecting. At the very north end of the beach is Carraig na Spainneach (Spaniards' Rock), where three ships of the Spanish Armada foundered; there are numerous anonymous burial stones nearby, said to mark the mass graves of some 1100 sailors who either drowned or were butchered by the British and the locals. There's B&B at Shaddan Lodge right by the strand (tel 071/63350; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), which also offers various alternative healing therapies.
