The countryside north of Sligo town is dominated by Benbulben, a foreboding plateau that rises steeply from surrounding farmland, its cold grey-green slopes presenting an extraordinary silhouette against the sky. It was much loved by W.B. Yeats, who asked to be buried beneath its slopes. Yeats' grave at Drumcliff church is something of a place of pilgrimage, and is well worth visiting to absorb the cold magic of the poet's choice and to learn more about his life and work at the nearby visitor centre. Immediately south of Benbulben lies the beautiful Glencar Lough, one of the scenic highlights of the area, while to the west lies Lissadell House, another essential stopping-off point for fans of Yeats that was home to the poet's friends Eva Gore-Booth and Constance Markiewicz. The countryside along this stretch of coast has none of the drama of the inland scenery, but it does conceal some very fine beaches, most notably at Rosses Point, Streedagh Strand and at Mullaghmore, where the shoreline swings northwards, capturing fabulous views of the Donegal mountains. The island of Inishmurray is a prime draw, a desolate place rich in early Christian remains
