The 24-mile circuit of Lough Gill , a broad lake just east of Sligo with luscious woodland covering the small hills that rise off its indented banks, makes a great day-trip by bike from Sligo - or you could break the journey midway in Dromahair and allow yourself more time to explore. A trip out onto the lake - on which sits the isle of Innisfree , immortalized by Yeats - is easily accessible from the centre of Sligo: to walk to the lake set off from Bridge Street east along the south bank of the river, until you come after about a mile to Doorly Park . Here, short woodland walks give views across the lake and a hint of the beauty that lies beyond. The Wild Rose waterbus from Doorly Park out to Parke's Castle is a wonderful journey by boat across the reed-whipped lake into the heart of Yeats' country (mid-March to May & Sept Sun 2.30pm; June-Aug daily 2.30pm; returns 5.30pm; GBP8/?10.16; tel 071/64266). From Parke's Castle, they also run trips to the isle of Innisfree on the lake . Out of high summer, you should phone in advance, or enquire at the tourist office, about their schedule. Alternatively, you could rent a rowing boat from the Blue Lagoon pub at Doorly Park (tel 071/42539) for GBP15/?19.05 a day, and make your own way onto the water; you'll pass the pub en route to the waterbus jetty.
