County Sligo has the greatest concentration of megalithic monuments in Ireland, as well as some of the wildest and most remote country. Especially poetic testaments to the ancient fusion of landscape and human presence are the extensive Neolithic cemetery at Carrowmore , to the south of Sligo town, and the large prehistoric village at Carrowkeel , on top of the Bricklieve Mountains. The pimple on top of Knocknarea is an unexcavated burial mound known locally as Maeve's Lump: legend has it that Queen Medb - Sligo's guardian spirit - is buried there, standing upright and still facing her enemies. This landscape and its culture inspired the great Irish poet W.B. Yeats , whose poetry is saturated with the atmosphere of Sligo. Yeats' presence still makes itself felt - above all at places such as the island of Innisfree on Lough Gill and Lissadell House , north of Sligo.
