The scenery in County Leitrim is far more distinctive than it's normally given credit for, especially the scintillating mountains and glens of the north, though it can't compete with Sligo for historical interest. Leitrim stretches fifty miles from County Longford in the southeast to its slim two-mile coastline at Tullaghan in the northwest, and is neatly split into north and south sections by the vast interruption of Lough Allen , the first lake on the River Shannon. The southern half is dominated by the presence of the Shannon, while the lake-peppered terrain to the east of the river, with its characteristic drumlins, or hillocks, also merits exploration. The mountains of the northern section are grouped around Manorhamilton , and Leitrim shares its most beautiful features - Glencar and Lough Gill - with Sligo.
