Recent history has hardly heightened County Armagh 's appeal for tourists. The villages of South Armagh - a predominantly Catholic area - were the heartland of violent Republicanism, so much so, in fact, that it has often been referred to as "Bandit Country" or "The Killing Fields", even by locals. On the other side of the sectarian divide, the name of Portadown has become synonymous with recalcitrant Unionism thanks to the stand-off at Drumcree church between the authorities and the Orange Order. Yet the county does warrant exploration, for it has some luscious landscapes and a history as rich as any county in Ireland: Armagh city has strong associations with St Patrick and early Christianity, while the sedately rural areas harbour some sites that are redolent of the island's legendary past, notably Navan Fort and Slieve Gullion .
