The main reason to head northwards into County Louth, apart from reaching the border, is to get to the mountains of the Cooley Peninsula . You have three routes to choose from: the main Drogheda to Belfast road, the N1, is the fastest, speeding directly towards the border and passing Monasterboice early on, but with little other reason to stop. An alternative inland route is to head towards Collon on the less busy N2 and north to Ardee, the scene of the heroic battle between Cuchulainn and Ferdia, then north to Louth town and St. Mochta's House, and on to Dundalk from there. These roads give excellent, unhindered cross-country views of County Louth, especially the drumlins rising inland towards counties Cavan and Monaghan. The final, more scenic option, suitable if you want to dawdle along or if you're cycling, is to take the bay road out of Drogheda and follow the coast north through the villages of Termonfeckin, Clogherhead, Anagassan , joining the main N1 road once again in the attractive village of Castlebellingham.
