A few miles north of Drogheda, lie two of the great historical sites which characterize this part of the country: the monasteries of Mellifont and Monasterboice . Both are easily reached from Drogheda and can be visited on your way to or from the sites of the lower Boyne Valley. To get to Mellifont from Drogheda (about five miles), turn off the road to Collon at Monleek Cross; alternatively turn off the Slane-Collon road at the signpost. There is no direct bus service to Mellifont, but Mullens taxis (tel 041/983 3377) will take you for GBP8/?10.16 each way. Monasterboice, six miles from Drogheda, can be reached from the main N1 Dublin-Belfast road, or by continuing up the Drogheda-Collon road and following the signs to the right
