Practicalities
Tullamore's tourist office (June-Aug Mon-Fri 10am-5pm; tel 0506/52617) is on Bury Quay; to get there from the main street, walk down Rahan Road, turn right and head towards the canal. If you want to stay , you could try one of the numerous B&Bs in town, such as the comfortable and friendly Oakfield House , Rahan Rd (tel 0506/21385; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), and High House (tel 0506/51358; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), which serves decent food at reasonable prices. You can feast on baked loin of marinated venison at the more upmarket Tullamore Court Hotel (tel 0506/46666, www.tullamorecourthotel.ie ; GBP70-90/?88.88-114.28), while traditional hospitality and hearty cuisine are available at the excellent Beechlawn Farmhouse (tel 0506/53099; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79) in Daingean, a little way out of Tullamore along the canal. Tullamore's location makes it a good starting-point for exploring either the Shannon or Barrow rivers by boat - it's linked to both by the Grand Canal - although if you're headed for the Shannon, it's worth considering basing yourself among the quieter charms of Banagher; cruisers can be rented from Celtic Canal Cruisers (tel 0506/21861). Bike rental is available from Buckley Cycles, Brewery Lane.
