Laois , or Leix in the more old-fashioned orthography (it's pronounced Leash ), is in many ways Ireland's least-known county. Most people know it only for the maximum security jail at Portlaoise, or as an ill-defined area you go through on the way to Limerick. While most Irish counties have a strong identity, Laois seems oddly accidental. To the east it's more or less bordered by the River Barrow ; to the north, it forms a large part of the Slieve Bloom mountain range (though some of that is in Co. Offaly); but to the west and south, with no distinct geographical features to mark its borders, Laois quietly gives way to its more prominent neighbours Tipperary and Kilkenny. Laois smarts from an image problem that's summed up by the adage that its landscape is like the local accent - flat and boring. That unjust reputation seems at last to be fading, as its quiet charms and proximity to Dublin attract a variety of people escaping the pressures of life in the capital.
