Boyle Practicalities

Practicalities

The tourist office is at the entrance to King House in Patrick Street, near the bridge (May-Sept 10am-5pm; tel 079/62145); as well as the usual services, it can give you details of the Boyle Arts Festival (tel 079/63085), well worth catching for its ambitious programme of concerts, theatre, poetry readings, lectures and exhibitions if you're in town in late July or early August. You can also get information from the Una Bhan Tourism Co-operative, which is also in the grounds of King House (tel 079/63033). Wedged between the rushing river and the abbey, Abbey House is a pleasant place to stay (closed Nov-Feb; tel 079/62385; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), as is Cois Crann (tel 079/62217; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79) directly opposite the Abbey; if neither of these suit try Forest Park House , Carrick Rd (tel 079/62227, forestparkhse@hotmail.com ; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), particularly welcoming to families, while four miles out of town in the townland of Doon is the fine Hillside House (tel 079/66075; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79). The 250-year-old Royal Hotel on Bridge St (tel 079/62016; GBP70-90/?88.88-114.28) is a solid country inn where the river rushes by your window. A little outside the town at Knockvicar is Riversdale House .

You can rent bikes (this makes a good starting point for touring the lakelands of northern and southern Sligo) from Brendan Sheerin, on Main Street; if he is closed (as is often the case) try Riverside Cycles (tel 079/63777). Horse riding is available at the Curlew Trekking Centre (tel 079/62764). Places to eat include: the restaurant at the

Royal , which now serves excellent Chinese food at very reasonable prices and has a good coffee shop for daytime eating, as does the Una Bhan restaurant in the grounds of King House. Bia Beo ("living food") in the shopping arcade on Bridge Street does fine evening meals, while the best lunches are served at An Craoibhin in the Crescent, also an excellent pub. For a genuine pub experience try Kate Lavin's , one that time seems to have forgotten.
