Roscommon has the unjust reputation of being the most boring county in Ireland. A long sliver of land running from south to north, it's the only county in Connacht without any sea coast, though it is bounded for almost its entire western border by the upper reaches of the Shannon. Although most of the county is either bog or good grassland pasture, the Curlew Mountains on the Sligo and Leitrim border rise high and wild. Chances are you'll be approaching the county from the south, which is not its best aspect: the most worthwhile places are Boyle , in the far north, for its access to the Curlew Mountains, and Strokestown in the east, with its remarkable Georgian mansion and Famine Museum.
