Practicalities
The new, informative tourist office midway down James St (April-June & Sept Mon-Sat 9am-6pm; July & August daily 9am-6pm; Oct-March Mon-Fri 9am-5.15pm; tel 098/25711) has an abundance of information, a fine selection of local historical and walking books plus a good gift shop. Daytime activities, sightseeing apart, are plentiful. If you're lucky with the weather the best beaches are at Bertra, six miles out on the Louisburgh Road, and Mulrany, eighteen miles away on the Achill Road. Cycling from Westport is rewarding, if strenuous - there are hills in almost all directions except towards Newport: bike rental is from Sean Sammon on James St (tel 098/25471; GBP6/?7.44 per day), or the Old Mill Hostel . Walking in the nearby Sheefry Hills or Dartry Mountains can be spectacular - pick up Paul Simms and Tony Wyatt's Northwest Walks at the tourist office or in any of the local bookshops. Horse riding , which will let you get right off the road, is available half a mile out of town on the Castlebar Road at the Drummindoo Equitation Centre (tel 098/25616), and also at Westport House. The sea angling in Clew Bay is magnificent, and there are also good opportunities for salmon and trout fishing in nearby lakes and rivers - details from the Sea Angling Centre in town. Sailing in sheltered waters can be arranged through the Mayo Sailing Club in Rosmoney (tel 098/26160) who offer good facilities and lessons for newcomers.
