Predominantly bogland, north Mayo - and especially the northwest - is an area that can seem forbidding in bad weather, but when the sun shines and suffuses everything in a hazy glow, you can forgive all. The long, straight bog road west to Belmullet is incredibly bleak and desolate, though the village itself is awash with garish, pastel-coloured buildings. North of Belmullet is the county's most interesting sight, the Ceide Fields , where prehistoric field patterns have been uncovered beneath nearly seven feet of bog, offering a startling view of the unchanging nature of human habitation here over five millennia. The coast road leading from the Ceide Fields to the historically resonant town of Killala , scene of the 1798 French invasion, is very dramatic.
