Beyond the Claddagh lies SALTHILL , Galway's seaside resort, complete with amusement arcades, discos, seasonal cafes and a fairground - as well as scores more hotels and B&Bs. Salthill's tourist office is on the front (June Mon-Sat 9am-6pm; July & Aug daily 9am-8.15pm; tel 091/520500). Alongside the tourist office is the new Atlantiquaria (daily 10am-5pm; tel 091/585100; GBP5/?6.35), which, as the name suggests, is an aquarium showcasing fish found off the shores of Ireland. It makes for a fun diversion for children on a wet day, as does the huge Leisureland amusement complex, which, apart from being used as a venue for big concerts, has a swimming pool (summer daily 10am-10pm). Lower Salthill has a long promenade with a series of unspectacular but safe and sandy beaches. Even on a hot summer's day it's never so busy as to be oppressive, and its great asset is the view over a glittering expanse of water to the Burren. West of here, Upper Salthill is a mess of a suburb that sits around its golf course, despoiled by huge billboards and caravan parks. Probably the nicest of the sandy beaches immediately west of Galway city is the small one at Silver Strand , nestling beneath a grassy headland about three miles out of the centre. Here, in a small inlet backed by a copse, is also the area's most pleasant campsite , signposted Hunters . The Twelve Pins pub, around a mile west of the site, is renowned for seafood. Galway's other special beach is Ballyloughrun , east of the city; this, too, has a campsite alongside and can be reached by taking the public footpath along by the railway line, or by either the Renmore or the Merlyn Park bus from the station.
