The countryside in the south of the county, around the southern shores of Galway Bay and on towards Clare, is some of the prettiest in Galway, and was greatly loved by Yeats, Lady Gregory and others associated with the Gaelic League. The main N18 road round the bay from the city is a busy one, passing through the villages of Galway's " oyster country " - Oranmore, Clarinbridge and Kilcolgan (where the main road leaves the water to head south towards Ennis) - and bringing plenty of visitors, particularly during the Oyster Festival over the second weekend in September. The most famous of the oyster pubs are Paddy Burke's Oyster Tavern at Clarinbridge and Moran's of the Weir , in a beautiful waterside setting at Kilcolgan . Two miles south of Kilcolgan, off the Kinvarra Road, stands Drumacoo Church , a fine stone building dating back to around 1200, with a Regency Gothic chapel of iron alongside, rusting and derelict.
