Draw a large triangle between Maam Cross, Rossaveel and Galway and you've defined the area known as Iar-Chonnacht , an open and bleak moorland of bog. Occasional white-splotched boulders lie naked on the peat that stretches to the skyline; any grass that survives is coarse and windblown, and, but for small pockets of forestation, the bog has no trees. It's difficult and wet walking country, but numerous lanes and boreens lead to tiny loughs set in the granite hollows of the hills - these are good for fishing for brown trout, sea trout or salmon. The moorland reaches its highest point near Lough Lettercraffoe on the Rossaveel to Oughterard Road , giving fine views down onto Lough Corrib , whose green and wooded shores are a vivid foil to the barren west.
