Dawson Street, just east of Grafton Street, is altogether quieter than its neighbour, and is home to some of Dublin's better bookshops as well as a number of august institutions. Chief among these is the Mansion House , a delicate building of 1710 weighed down by heavy Victorian wrought iron. This has been the official residence of the Lord Mayor since 1715 and was also where the Dail Eireann , the Irish parliament, met in 1919 to ratify the Independence proclamation of 1916. The Mansion House isn't generally open to the public, but in any case there's not a great deal to be seen inside. Next door, the decorous red-brick house containing the Royal Irish Academy is also closed to the public. One of the great learned institutions of Europe, it publishes books of Irish interest and has a weighty collection of Irish manuscripts. Next door again, St Anne's (Church of Ireland) church has an amazingly ornate Italianate facade which is a real surprise when you catch sight of it along Anne Street. Inside, behind the altar, are wooden shelves that were originally designed to take loaves of bread for distribution among the poor of the parish under the provisions of a 1720s bequest. On Thursday lunchtimes, St Anne's hosts a series of recitals and other cultural activities - check In Dublin for details.
