In some ways the topography of Dublin has stayed remarkably constant since the city was founded, when the Vikings sited their Haugen or Thengmote, the central meeting place and burial ground, on what is now College Green . Formerly known as Hoggen Green, it remained the centre of administrative power in Ireland until the Act of Union. Today there is little green to be seen, except the small patch of coiffured lawn to the front of the gates of Ireland's most prestigious university, Trinity College. Opposite the college stands the classical facade of the Bank of Ireland which, for 71 years in the 18th century, acted as the country's parliament.
