South Kerry and The Fianna
Many legends of the Fianna , a band of warriors led by Finn Mac Cool who served the High King in the third century, are set in South Kerry. One of them tells of how, near Killarney, Niamh, a golden-haired beauty on a white horse, persuaded Finn's son Oisin to come away to her kingdom. Where the magical wave Tonn Toime roars between Inch and Rossbeigh, they galloped out across the sea to Tir na nog, the Land of Eternal Youth. After a blissful three hundred years, Oisin borrowed Niamh's magical horse to visit his homeland, with a warning not to dismount. Unable to find any of the Fianna in Kerry, he rode north to Dublin and found a band of puny men trying to shift a boulder. Leaning down to help, he broke a girth and landed on the ground a very old man. Before he died, St Patrick persuaded him to convert to Christianity.
