Given the number of visitors to Killarney, it's not surprising that there's plenty of entertainment laid on, particularly throughout the summer. Although the widely publicized "traditional" Irish music can seem pretty spurious when you are surrounded by bus loads of other tourists, it sounds great nonetheless. All the pubs we've listed have some form of music several nights a week during the summer months; in winter this dies down to weekends and Monday nights only in some instances, with the exception of the Grand Hotel. If you just want a quiet pint, you'll need to ask at the bar whether or not there is likely to be music later in the evening because Killarney is a lively town and sessions tend to move around. In May, July and October there's racing at Killarney's race course on Ross Road, which, like any Irish race meeting, is well worth a detour. The tourist office can give details of gaelic football matches; Killarney is a top team and feelings run high. The Rally of the Lakes brings hordes of motor fanatics to Killarney over the first weekend in May. Rally drivers roar along the roads around the lakes, so if you want to enjoy the mountains in peace, this is probably a weekend best avoided.
