Horse-drawn Caravan Holidays On The Dingle Peninsula
The ultimate Irish tourism cliche it may be, but a horse-drawn caravan holiday is a great way to unwind and to absorb the breathtaking beauty of the Dingle Peninsula. What's more, you're likely to have a very sociable time, the caravan's theatricality provoking plenty of conversation. You can also expect to develop a strong relationship with your horse - one way or another. Slattery's Travel, 1 Russell St, Tralee (tel 066/718 6240; freephone from the UK tel 0800/515900 for brochure) rent out caravans for three-day weekends (GBP180/?228.55 low season only) and week-long breaks (GBP290/?368.22 low season, GBP590/?745.15 high season); additional costs include GBP8/?10.16 per night stopover fee, GBP5/?6.35 per day insurance and GBP12/?15.24 per week horsefeed. Slattery's will tell you no previous experience of handling horses is necessary, but it certainly helps - as do height and brute strength. Before setting off, however, friendly stable-workers take you through the basics of catching, harnessing, driving, watering and feeding your horse. Slattery's also supply a map of the peninsula with a range of routes and stopover sites; most sites are fields alongside pubs, so you can have a drink beneath the stars and still keep an eye on the children. Caravans have one double bed, a small single, and a couple of extra fold-down bunks - with bedding. In theory there's room for five people, though in fact any more than three adults may well find it a bit cramped, and if there are more of you, it's a good idea to have a small tent. The caravans also come equipped with a small stove and cooking utensils
