The interior of the Dingle Peninsula is dominated by two mountains, Mount Brandon and Beenoskee Mountain, separated by the steep Conor Pass . This mountainous terrain is excellent walking country; not only are there countless relics of the Celtic church and earlier to explore, but the area is dotted by a series of lakes that give the tussocky landscape some focus. There's a hostel at the foot of the pass on the northern side, the Conor Pass Hostel (IHH; closed Dec-mid-March; tel 066/713 9179) in Stradbally , where you'll find good sandy beaches for swimming. The Maharees Peninsula , stretching north from Stradbally, is an exposed spit of land fringed by long sandy beaches, affording plenty of opportunities for surfing, wind-surfing, canoeing and water-skiing - all of which can be arranged through the Castlegregory Visitor Information Centre in Strand St (summer only; tel 066/713 9422).
