Though some stretches are forested, most of the five-mile route north from Portsalon to Fanad Head is through humpy and barren land, with clusters of granite pushing through marshy ground. By the roadside there's a Holy Well , decked out with a crazier than usual collection of mementos. Before reaching the Head, there is one other curiosity worth taking in - the rock formation known as the Seven Arches , created by the constant erosive battering of the waters. To get there, follow the signpost on the right of the road, then take the path down to the new house, and finally cross the fields to the rocky strand. Alternatively, there's private access to the arches from Ballydaheen Gardens, a gorgeous six-acre spread of flora, herbs and vegetables (mid-May to Aug; GBP3/?3.80). Returning to the main road, you'll find that it leads straight on to Fanad Head , where it reaches a dramatically placed cliff-edge lighthouse and its namesake public house, the Lighthouse Tavern . The road from here runs on down to the low rocky coast, and a pebble beach.
