The road from Carrigart to the Fanad Peninsula passes close to Mulroy Bay before arriving in MILFORD , a village with amenities but little attraction, though the Milford Inn , out on the Ramelton road, is a popular venue at weekends, usually for country and Irish music (the national adaptation of country and western). From Milford, the road up the western side of the peninsula leads to KERRYKEEL , passing on the way the Mulroy Ballroom , one of the few remaining 1960s showband ballrooms (June-Aug ceilidhs on Wed night). The Rockhill Caravan Park (tel 074/50012), opposite the ballroom, provides the only basic accommodation in the area. The Village Inn at the northern end of the village has a somewhat expensive but wide-ranging menu and Mr Ed's serves huge portions of fish and chips. McGettigan's Bar has almost nightly entertainment in summer. From Kerrykeel the road north runs along the water's edge up to TAMNEY where there's B&B at Avalon House (April-Sept; tel 074/59031; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79). Further on, the landscape flattens and the ubiquitous "Fanad fences" begin to appear, agricultural wire barriers which scythe across the countryside and deter adventurous walking. A left turn at the Fanad Lodge bar will take you past the large Ballyhiernan Strand through hillocks and boulder-strewn terrain to BALLYWHORISKEY where a restored pre-Famine cottage houses a small heritage centre (open daily from 2pm), with boats for rent. From here you can return to the main road to Fanad Head.
