If you travel along the western shore of Lough Eske, you'll reach the point where the river flows in at the lough's northern tip. Nearby, a dirt road runs off to the left to take you into the Blue Stack Mountains . At the top of the pathway that leads on from the track, there are superb views over the lough and, nearby, the very fine Doonan waterfall. From here you can join the waymarked Bluestack Way , which passes Lough Belshade ( Bheal Seod , "lake of the jewels"), guarded in legend by a huge black cat. If you're intending to tramp around the mountain range, it's best to keep to the skirts of the hills, for there are many marshy patches on lower ground - and be prepared for misty pockets during bad weather.
