The routes north from Ardara and Glenties converge at the village of MAAS . The road then twists along the edge of Gweebarra Bay before one last turn suddenly brings you to the broad iron bridge spanning the estuary. Until the first bridge was built in 1890 rarely a year passed by without someone being drowned attempting to ford the river, sometimes home-workers bringing wool back from Glenties. Across the bridge and west of LETTERMACAWARD , a signposted scenic route tours the Dooey Point headland , a scenically interesting little detour if you have time at hand. The northern shore, on Trawenagh Bay, is the more gratifying, with a fine stretch of beach backed by sand dunes. Classic thatched cottages are the main characteristics. On the southern side is Cor Strand , fertile ground for mussels and clams, with a handy bar nearby.
