Kinsale Eating

Eating

Kinsale is a well-known gourmet centre - it even has a gourmet festival which is generally held during the first and second week in October (if you plan to stay - or eat - here, then, book well in advance) and has numerous good - and expensive -restaurants. Details can be obtained from the tourist office, but actually this quaint town is small enough to make wandering the streets and browsing the menus in the windows an attractive proposition. Kinsale also has two excellent delis: The Quay Food Co. on Market Quay stocks organic produce, Irish cheeses, coffee, preserves and olives, and Kinsale Gourmet Store is similarly enticing. More mundane eating options are available at the fast-food outlet opposite the tourist office and in the well-stocked supermarket on Pearse Street.

Cafe Kokopelli , Guardswell. Stylish, inexpensive brunch and snacks served throughout the day.

Crackpots , 3 Cork St (tel 021/477 2847) A fairly informal bistro-restaurant with plenty of interesting artwork and - as the name suggests - ceramics. Varied menu that might offer fragrant Indian spiced pork, rack of lamb with mango and passion fruit sauce or a roast vegetable filo bake. Dinner from around GBP20/?25.70; early bird menu GBP15/?19.05 until 7.30pm.

Kinsale Gourmet Store , Guardswell. Deli and fishmongers with a no-nonsense cafe interior and one of the best places to enjoy a great range of fresh seafood - including mussels, crab, lobster and

cray fish - mostly for under GBP10/?12.85. Open daily till 4pm.

1601 , Pearse St. Unpretentious pub serving good bar food: their ploughman's lunch comes with Milleens and Cashel Blue cheeses, they do fine open crab-meat sandwiches, and in the chillier months offer warming stews.

The White House , The Glen. Excellent, inexpensive bar food such as chicken stuffed with Irish brie, and celery sauce and salmon smoked in white wine feature alongside the Irish stew.
