Walking down the street in Glengarriff you'll inevitably be hassled sooner or later by a stage-Irish boatman trying to sell you a ticket for Garinish Island . The island trip is quite something, although massively overpriced. In 1910, the owner of Garinish conceived a plan to turn his island - then bare rock - into a floating oasis of exotic plantlife. All the topsoil had to be imported and the resultant growth delicately nurtured for years. The end product is undeniably impressive: flowers and shrubs from all over the world flourish here, and through much of the year the place is ablaze with colour, in vibrant contrast to the desolate mountains of the Beara a stone's throw across the water. If you decide to take the ten-minute trip out there past basking seals, be warned that the price you pay the boatmen (GBP5/?6.35) does not include admission to the island (March & Oct Mon-Sat 10am-6.30pm; April-June & Sept Mon-Sat 10am-6.30pm, Sun 1-7pm; July & Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-6.30pm, Sun 11am-7pm; GBP2.50/?3.18; Heritage Card).
