Whichever way you travel out of Bantry, the scenery is magnificent. Heading east, the road to Dunmanway and its fine independent hostel (p.295) takes you through fabulous empty mountains, while the Pass of Keimaneigh further north leads through a steep, rocky ravine up to Ballingeary, Gougane Barra and a corrie lake, the source of the River Lee. An island on this lake was the site of St Finbarr's hermitage before he founded his monastery at Cork city downstream. The remains on the island are, however, eighteenth century. It's an area famous for its beauty, popular for day-trips, and there's a bar that does teas and sandwiches beside the lake. Gougane Barra also has a forest park with nature trails (GBP2/?2.54).
