Practicalities
The tourist office is on Market Square, just behind the harbour (June-Sept Mon-Fri & Sun 9.30am-6pm, Sat 9.30am-1pm & 2.15-6pm; Oct-May Mon-Fri 9.30am-1pm & 2-5.30pm; tel 024/20170). You'll find plenty of B&Bs along the main streets and around the quayside - try Avonmore House (tel 024/92617; GBP40-55/?50.79-69.84) or Attracta (tel 024/92062; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79) both on South Abbey or Roseville on New Catherine St (tel 024/92571; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79). There are plenty more out on the Cork Road, including Shalamar (tel 024/93398; GBP26-33/?33.01-41.90), about two miles out of town. Hotel accommodation is available at The Devonshire Arms Hotel , Pearse Square (tel 024/92827; GBP70-90/?88.88-114.28), and Aherne's , on North Main St (tel 024/92424, www.ahernes.com ; GBP110-130/?139.67-165.07), both in the centre of town. The latter is also renowned for its seafood restaurant (tel 024/92424). The other hotel in the area is The Hilltop Hotel (tel 024/92911; GBP55-70/?69.84-88.88), a mile and a half along the road towards Cork. The International Busking Festival during the first weekend in August offers GBP3000 prize money - and suddenly camping space is available everywhere. There's no shortage of places to eat in Youghal. The Coffee Pot , on North Main St, just near the clock tower, serves good-value meals; nearby the bistro-style Perfect Blend serves moderately priced Irish, Italian and vegetarian dishes. For good bar food, try The Devonshire Arms Hotel , Pearse Square at the west end of the town centre. You'll find music of some sort in Youghal's bars several nights a week during the summer, and at the weekends throughout the year. The Nook on Main Street and the Walter Raleigh Hotel are a couple of likely places to find traditional music and ballads, and The Clock , 56 South Main St, has rock and pop bands. If you just want a quiet pint, head for the Moby Dick pub on the quays - Youghal was used as a location for the film of the same name, and inside you'll find memorabilia and photographs from the making of the film. To the west of town, clean sandy beaches stretch for miles.
