East Cork has none of the scenic splendour of the west, but there are points of interest as you pass through, and a couple of spots that make a good day trip from Cork city if you don't have the time or means to venture further afield. A trip across the harbour to Fota , with its wild animals and eighteenth-century Classicism, and Cobh with its watersports, will allow you to get back in the evening early enough to take advantage of Cork's nightlife. On the way further east to the quaint port of Youghal - with its colourful maritime history and scenic location - there are a string of places worth a brief stop, including Midleton , the home of Jameson whiskey. The beaches at Ballycotton and Garryvoe can't compete with those to the west of Cork, but are pleasant enough.
