Around five miles southeast of Skibbereen at the end of the R596 lies CASTLETOWNSEND , a delightful little village worth making a quick detour to see. The village clings to a steep lane, a tree in the middle of the road sending what traffic there is gingerly either side, and ends abruptly at a tiny stone quay. It's an eerie, twee place, and appropriately enough was once the home of Edith Somerville of Somerville & Ross fame, authors of the Irish RM stories. Their graves are to be found in St Barrahane's churchyard. There's little else to see here, but there is good seafood on the bar menu at Mary Ann's , an attractive little pub worth seeking out.
