Bantry Eating, Drinking and Entertainment

Eating, Drinking and Entertainment

There are just a handful of decent places to eat in Bantry and it has to be said that if the weather's fine and the tide's out, getting together a picnic and heading out around the northern shoreline is a good option. This aside, The Snug on the square serves excellent cheap bar food (last orders 8.30pm daily); The Pantry Bistro (tel 027/52181) on New Street, above a butcher's shop and opposite the supermarket, has a welcoming, informal atmosphere and a good spot for a varied menu that might include pasta, burritos and salads during the day and moderately priced Mediterranean-style meals in the evening. O S'ochain , in Bridge Street, is a cheery cafe serving hearty lunches and seafood platters and The Brick Oven , on the square, is a cafe serving pizza, pasta and steaks. For more upmarket evening meals in a comfortable and relaxed setting you might try the French and Italian food at Claret's Bistro (tel 027/52187) on the corner of Barrack and Marino streets.

Regular pubs are plentiful: The Anchor Bar is a convivial place to start, with a good, friendly mix of locals and visitors. Bantry is a small town, and entertainment is a matter of getting involved in whatever's going on. You're as likely to enjoy a handful of rock music or ballad sessions in the bars as anything else: try The Anchor Bar , The Bantry Bay or Vickery's Inn , New Street, a rather low key bar, but with folk or traditional music on a Monday night. classical music festival usually held during the last week in June (tel 027/52788, www.westcorkmusic.ie ), a great time to be in town; along with the full programme of events at Bantry House there are classical fringe events in Vickery's Inn , serving as a platform for young musicians, and there's a literary fringe too with readings by Irish writers. Finally, Bantry's mussel festival over the second weekend in May brings with it music, late bars and plenty of seafood.
