Bus Eireann buses , connecting with Cork, Skibbereen, Glengarriff, Killarney and the Mizen Head Peninsula, leave from outside Murphy's Bar (information inside) on the quays. Private buses leave from Wolfe Tone Square (usually just referred to as The Square). This building also houses the tourist office (May-Sept Mon-Sat 9.15am-5.30pm, Sun 10am-1pm & 2.15-6pm; tel 027/50229). Bike rental is available at Kramer's, Glengarriff Road (tel 027/50278; GBP8/?10.16).

There's a good, if small, range of accommodation in Bantry and the surrounding area and it's advisable to book ahead during July, August and during the classical music festival generally held at the end of June. The hostel , Bantry Independent Hostel , is on Bishop Lucey Place (IHH; tel 027/51050), a short signposted walk from The Square. It's a friendly, welcoming hostel with a big garden and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger; children are welcome. Camping is also available at the hostel, along with Internet access, and a laundry service. Camping is also available at Ballylickey, four miles from Bantry along the road towards Glengarriff: Eagle Point Caravan and Camping Park (closed Oct-April; tel 027/50630) is a superbly situated site right on the edge of the bay; you can swim from their pebbly beach and there are excellent wild mountain walks roundabout. It's well worth calling in at Manning's Emporium nearby, an excellent deli with a huge range of Irish cheeses.

Bantry House (tel 027/50047, www.hidden-ireland.com/bantry ). One of the finest stately mansions in Ireland in a superb loation overlooking the bay, yet still a family home. The interior is furnished with antiques and works of art, and musical concerts are often held here. Dinner is available (enquire when booking). Closed Nov-Feb. Over GBP130/?165.07.

Blackrock House B&B , 1 Blackrock Terrace (tel 027/50432, www.cork-guide.ie/blackroc.htm ) A mid-nineteenth century house with an elegant, antique-filled dining room offering rooms with en-suite showers - some also with en-suite baths. Excellent location on a quiet lane in the town centre. GBP40-55/?50.79-69.84.

Dunauley , Seskin (tel 027/50290). Located just under a mile out along the steep road towards Vaughan's Pass, this very comfortable and welcoming B&B offers some of the most spectacular views in Cork. The excellent breakfast menu includes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, stewed fruits and Irish cheeses. Rooms with views are slightly more expensive than those without, but are well worth the extra money. GBP40-55/?50.79-69.84.

The Mill , Newtown (tel 027/50278). Half a mile along the Glengarriff road, this spacious bungalow is comfortably furnished, with stripped pine floors and every inch of wall covered with vibrant paintings; all bedrooms are en suite and non-smoking. Closed Nov-March. GBP40-55/?50.79-69.84.

Sunville (tel 027/50175) Modern bungalow B&B about half a mile out on the road towards Glengarriff. Standard and en-suite rooms available; non-smoking bedrooms. Closed Nov-March. GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79.

Westlodge Hotel (tel 027/50360, www.westlodgehotel.ie ). Westlodge was purpose built and opened in 1970 with over 100 bedrooms. The majority of its rooms have en-suite baths and all have TVs, radios and tea- and coffee-making facilities. The high season rates are expensive for the standard, though there is a leisure centre, with pool, tennis and squash courts are the major draw. The hotel is located about a mile out of town on the southbound N71. GBP110-130/?139.67-165.07.
