Tiny Sherkin Island is a delightfully pretty place: the considerable remains of a fifteenth-century Franciscan friary nestle down by the quayside, and little fuchsia-spattered lanes lead across the island to fine sandy beaches in the west. There are the remains of an O'Driscoll stronghold, too, and the annual O'Driscoll clan gathering in June is a hectic five-day event spread between Sherkin Island, Clear Island and Baltimore. The place can get busy with day-trippers on bank holidays and during July and August. If you want to stay you can get B&B at Cuina House (tel 028/20384; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79) and Island House (tel 028/20314; GBP26-33/?33.01-41.90) - both closed in winter. If these are full, it's worth asking at the Jolly Roger pub for alternatives. The Jolly Roger does bar food during the summer: at other times you can buy supplies at the post office.
