For all the development of holiday homes jostling around BALTIMORE , the quayside at the heart of the place still retains the engaging bustle and spirit of an old fishing harbour, the sixteenth-century O'Driscoll stronghold visible above the new houses. Combining traditional fishing activities with tourism, Baltimore makes a good base from which to explore this part of the coast. It's popular too with the yachting crowd and the port is particularly busy during the regatta held on the last two weeks in July and the first weekend in August. Baltimore also serves as the departure point for ferries to Sherkin and Clear islands , as well as Schull on the Mizen Peninsula .
