Practicalities
The tourist office , in Lock House on The Bridge (May-Sept daily 10am-6pm; tel 061/376866), can help with accommodation. Alternatively you could opt for one of the central B&Bs , such as Kincora House , Church St (tel 061/376149; GBP40-55/?50.79-69.84), a lovely old town house with antiquated furnishings, or Lyon's B&B (tel 061/376652; GBP33-40/?41.90-50.79), just next door. For something more luxurious, check in at The Lakeside Hotel (tel 061/376122; GBP90-110/?114.28-139.67). Camping beside the lake is possible at the Lough Derg Holiday Park (closed late Sept-April; tel 061/376329), just three miles north of Killaloe along the Scarriff Road. One-hour lough cruises on the Derg Princess leave from beside the tourist office (May-Sept daily noon & 2.30pm; GBP5/?6.35), and the Spirit of Killaloe departs from the pier at Ballina, across the bridge in Tipperary (July & Aug daily 1pm, 2.30pm & 4pm). To rent boats with outboard engines, that can take up to four adults, call in at Whelan's Foodstore, Main St (tel 061/376159; GBP10/?12.70 first hour, GBP5/?6.35 additional hours, GBP30/?38.09 a day). You can rent wind-surfs, canoes, wetsuits and dinghies from Killaloe Activity Centre (tel 061/376622), situated two miles out along the road towards Scarriff. You'll find a few pubs serving decent food both in Killaloe and across the bridge in Ballina: Crotty's Courtyard Bar , Bridge St, Killaloe, is a popular spot with a fabulous collection of old signs, a cheery beer-yard, and bar food till 10pm in summer; across the bridge Gooser's is a rather pricier place for good-quality bar food; the nearby Simply Delicious cafe serves cheap meals that are just that. Many pubs have some kind of music at weekends during the summer - usually a traditional/country mix. For set dancing and traditional music head for The Anchor Inn , Bridge St (Wed summer); Molly's , across the bridge in Ballina, usually has traditional music (Thurs summer). In OGONNELLOE , two and half miles north of Killaloe, The Piper's Inn (tel 061/375544; GBP26-33/?33.01-41.90) is noted for its traditional music sessions on weekends and also offers reasonably priced B&B. The village is also on the East Clare Way .
