Ennis Eating and Drinking

Eating and Drinking

There are a handful of places to eat in Ennis, although it has to be said that most of these have a fairly workaday character. For general provisions, the small O'Connell Street shop front of Dunne's Store's hides an enormous, and well stocked, supermarket behind.

Domaine , River Lane, Wood Quay (off Parnell St). A laid-back wine bar serving light meals such as salads and seafood platters. Closed Sunday.

Henry's Deli , Barrack St. Cafe serving cheap and tasty sandwiches stuffed with delicious cheeses, relishes and Mediterrean salads. Closed Sunday.

Numero Uno , 3 Barrack St (tel 065/684 1740). This tiny, cheap and cheerful pizza cafe offers eat in or takeaway and is open till late.

Old Ground Hotel , O'Connell St. A traditional hotel bar whose wood-panelled walls hung with oil paintings generate a comfortably conservative atmosphere. Decent bar meals are served here from Monday to Saturday, and typical dishes include stuffed pork, fried fish and braised beef in Guinness. Lighter meals of soup and sandwiches are served on a Sunday.

Punjab , 59 Parnell St (tel 065/684 4655). One of the best Indian restaurants in the west of Ireland, and reasonably priced too. Lunchtimes are exceptionally good value.

Ruby Tuesday's , Merchants Square (tel 065/684 0474). An inexpensive, family restaurant with a broad range of meals on offer - burgers, pastas, chicken and fish - and a BYO policy.

The Sherwood Inn , Ennis Shopping Centre, Francis St. The place to go when funds are low for a cheap and hearty breakfast or lunch.

Temple Gate Hotel , Arthur's Bow. Spacious medieval theme-bar which offers good-value carvery lunches at midday, and bar meals in the evening.
