At the junction of Sudurgata and the busy Hringbraut, the closest thing Iceland has to a motorway, is the entrance to the National Museum , unfortunately closed for renovation until at least December 2002. Small, but quite comprehensive, the museum aims to give an easily digested summary of the country's past, including excavation finds from pagan places or worship and Viking graves, such as items from Bergporshvoll , where Njal, of Njal's Saga, lived. There will also be a collection of religious artefacts, chiefly from the eleventh to thirteenth century, plus a weighty stock of craftworks of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. However, the prime exhibit looks set to remain a carved wooden door, which dates to around 1200 and depicts an ancient warrior on horseback slugging it out with an unruly dragon.
