Sexual Harassment
In general, Iceland is an egalitarian society, and, though women still sometimes get paid less than men for comparable work, they enjoy a higher economic and social status than in most other European countries. Kvennrepindahreyfingin, the Women's Rights Movement , was founded in the early twentieth century and drove through women's right to vote and receive an equal education and, when needed, still assists with the latter. Sexual harassment is less of a problem here than elsewhere in Europe. You can move almost everywhere in comparative comfort and safety, and although in Reykjavik clubs you might receive occasional unwelcome attentions - or simply be taken aback by the blatant atmosphere - there's very rarely any kind of violent intent. Needless to say, hitching alone, or wandering around central Reykjavik late at night, is unwise. If you do have any problems, the fact that almost everyone understands English makes it easy to get across an unambiguous response
