Flights
Flying in Iceland is good value: the single airfare from Reykjavik to Egilsstadir, for instance, is around 7000kr - little more than half the price of a one-way bus fare for the same journey - and takes just one hour instead of two days. As an added bonus, you'll get a different take on Iceland's unique landscape from above - flying over Vatnajokull's vast expanse of ice is about the only way to get a grasp of its scale. The main domestic carrier is Flugfelag Islands, who fly all year from Reykjavik to Vestmannaeyjar, Isafjordur, Akureyri, Egilsstadir and Hofn (Hornafjordur) almost daily. From Akureyri, they have less regular connections between April and October to Grimsey, Isafjordur, Egilsstadir, Vopnafjordur and GBPorshofn. Other airlines out of Reykjavik and Akureyri concentrate on connections to remoter settlements across Iceland's northwest and northeast. Islandsflug is the largest of these operators, and also offers combined air-and-land tours of a day's or more duration from Reykjavik to various popular spots: Husavik for whale watching; Myvatn for the lake and nearby hot pots; and Vestmannaeyjar for puffins and more volcanoes. Booking flights presents no particular problems, and we've given contact details for airline offices and agents throughout the guide. Note, however, that bad weather can cause cancellations at short notice and that it's best to book ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Some sample fares from Reykjavik are: Vestmannaeyjar 4500kr single/9000kr return; Akureyri 6000/12,000kr; and Egilsstadir 7000/14,000kr. Air passes can be bought in Iceland from Icelandair or Air Iceland offices. The Flugfelag Islands pass comprises coupons (4 for 20,700kr, 5 for 23,600kr, 6 for 27,100kr; valid for one year on all routes), whereby each is redeemed for a flight; the first can be booked well in advance, the others up to 24 hours before departure. The same conditions apply to the Fly As You Please Pass, which offers twelve days unlimited travel on Flugfelag Islands routes (32,900kr). Luggage allowance is 20kg, and you need to check in thirty minutes before departure.
